Vikram Batra was born in Soleh, Kangra, Himachal Pradesh on 9 September 1974. He was the son of Girdhari Lal Batra and Kamal Kanta Batra.

Batra was born on 9 September 1974 in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh. He was the son of teacher Girdhari Lal Batra and Kamal Kanta.
Vikram’s father named his son after a film character “Vikram” played by Dilip Kumar in the film Vikram (1947 film).
In March 1994, he was selected for special forces training at Mountain Warfare School, Nainital. After completing his training, he was posted to command a platoon responsible for carrying out intelligence-based operations across the Line of Control with Pakistan and China along their heavily militarised border.
He joined the Indian Army in 1997 as an officer cadet at Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun.
He commanded several units during his career and had displayed exemplary leadership qualities. His most notable performance was when he led his men to victory against Pakistani forces during war between India and Pakistan over Kashmir region.
He was posted to 3/11 Gorkha Rifles in June 1998 and fought in the Kargil War with his brigade, 14 Infantry Brigade of XXXIII Corps.
Vikram Batra was a legendary officer of the Indian Army. He was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra for his bravery during the 1965 Indo-Pak war.
