Vikram Batra was born in Soleh, Kangra, Himachal Pradesh on 9 September 1974. He was the son of Girdhari Lal Batra and Kamal Kanta Batra.

Batra was commissioned after training in the NDA.


Lieutenant Batra was an officer in the 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, an infantry regiment of the Indian Army. He led his men in a battle at Point 5140 (19,000 feet). He killed three Pakistani soldiers before being wounded.

Despite being injured, he called for reinforcements from his unit over radio. On hearing that a soldier was wounded, he said ‘yeh main hoon aur yahan main aa raha hoon’ (this is me and I am coming there). The same night he scaled the peak again along with his soldiers and recaptured it.

He was a martyr in the Indian armed forces. Vikram Batra, PVC was an officer of the Indian Army and one of the greatest heroes to die fighting against terrorism.

Batra was born on 9 September 1974 in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh. He was the son of teacher Girdhari Lal Batra and Kamal Kanta.

Vikram’s father named his son after a film character “Vikram” played by Dilip Kumar in the film Vikram (1947 film).

In March 1994, he was selected for special forces training at Mountain Warfare School, Nainital. After completing his training, he was posted to command a platoon responsible for carrying out intelligence-based operations across the Line of Control with Pakistan and China along their heavily militarised border.

He joined the Indian Army in 1997 as an officer cadet at Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun.

He commanded several units during his career and had displayed exemplary leadership qualities. His most notable performance was when he led his men to victory against Pakistani forces during war between India and Pakistan over Kashmir region.

He was posted to 3/11 Gorkha Rifles in June 1998 and fought in the Kargil War with his brigade, 14 Infantry Brigade of XXXIII Corps.

Vikram Batra was a legendary officer of the Indian Army. He was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra for his bravery during the 1965 Indo-Pak war.

During his career, he has served extensively in different parts of India including Kashmir and Ladakh region in Jammu & Kashmir and Leh in Ladakh region.

He was one of the most decorated soldiers in India’s history. He has been awarded India’s highest military decoration — the Param Vir Chakra, which is India’s second highest gallantry award after the Maha Vir Chakra.

For his “most conspicuous gallantry” in Jammu and Kashmir on 7 July 1999 during a fierce battle with Pakistani troops at Kargil. Where he led an assault party to clear out enemy bunkers in his area.

He died on 7July 1999 in an attack by Pakistani forces on a forward post of the 1st battalion of the 5th Gorkha Rifles, near Ramgarh in Jammu and Kashmir.
